"Autorun.exe" not recognised....
Hi everyone!
This is my first posting here at this forum. I finished uploading Ubuntu 10.4 x64 bit onto my newly built puter but it won't download the driver CD that came with the mobo. Dialog box says it can't find the autorun command. This would never happen with even the worst of Windows OS, what's the deal?
I even went into the files and pulled the autorun.exe folder, and it still can't see it !! This on top of the fact I can't get the OS to allow me access to the net....this is getting frustrating. I'm using my old puter to access this forum cause of aforementioned issue, can anyone help? Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!"Autorun.exe" not recognised....
Files with exe extensions are generally going to be Windows executables and Linux doesn't use them, very much like Windows doesn't use Linux files. Most device drivers for Linux are included within the kernel, although there are a few drivers that have to be installed manually.oz

Hi and Welcome !
You don't need driver for any piece of Hardware except a few Wireless Cards and Graphics Cards like Nvidia or ATI.
Which Graphics Card do you have? Isn't sound, display, wireless etc. working fine out of box?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Thanks for answering me, I have a wireless modem card and a Gear Wireless Modem connected to my DSL modem. The other two puters in the house work fine but I can't get my new build up to speed, and it's all about this OS vs my lack of understanding it.
I know once I get up to speed it will be a wonderful OS, which is why I chose it over WINDOWS 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The simplest things are a mountain climb, I can't get the driver CD to RUN, I can't get on-line, and I can't get my printer software uploaded. I'm sure it will get better but so far I'm just dead in the water.

It's better to use correct concepts.
You have wireless netork card, you have wireless router-accesspoint, and you have DSL modem.
Nothing on that CD will be of any use, just forget it.
To get your wireless NIC working we need to know what brand and model it is.
Please do sudo lspci from a terminal, this will list your PCI hardware.

I have both Nvidia & ATI. The mobo has a G45000 built into it also with 250Mb shared RAM @ DDR3/1366MHZ clock. I'm using a GEAR wireless modem, and have a Wireless card in the PCI slot for signal. The wireless system isw working fine in two other puters so I know it's not anything modem related, it's this OS not recognising or not allowing, and I don't know how to work around any of these issues.

OK, Go to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers. You should see any required drivers there. Tick the box (choose recommended if there is more than one offered) and they will be downloaded and installed for you. You will be asked for your password.
Remember, Linux isn't Windows and trying to run Windows software on Linux is like trying to run X-Box software on a PS3!. Well there is Wine but that's another story

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

OK I performed [sudo ispci] but I wish you'd have helped a little with some navigation instructions. I know nothing of Linux, getting to a terminal took hours of trial and error.
After getting there I realized what you were after and I already possessed that data anyway. So what now? I have the brand and specs of the PCI card adapter. The drivers for this device are on a disc that you say is worthless, and I can't get on-line to download any using that computer....so what's next?

This was a waste of time as my problem is that I have no net access. You navigated me to a website driven dialog box for driver downloading.....what were you thinking? That dialog box was empty as I just installed this OS, I can't even load the MB drivers (because Linux doesn't recognize DOS command structures) for the new mobo let alone get on line and search for better drivers for my wireless PCI card adapter!! Having the CD for that card is also worthless for all the same reasons...very frustrated now.

My printer is wireless, my net access is also, so my problems are very real. I've been reading some threads of others with my same issues of not being able to connect to the net using wireless adapters, and they are way ahead of me in terms of fixes and work arounds, nothing is working for them either. Some of the stuff they've been doing is things I would never even think of doing, and yet they are still as stuck as me!
My graphics is built into my mobo, but without the drivers loaded from the CD that came with the mobo I don't see how I will be able to use the potential it offers. The new computer with this (Ubuntu) OS is not using drivers that access the best aspects of that hardware. It runs, but not at peak efficiency.
