yea so ubuntu usually never gives me crap with graphics but for some reason the gtx460 isnt that well supported yet. i had to manually install drivers from the website and now i can turn the resolution up, but every time my computer resets, the screen resolution drops back down to 800x600. where is the config file to edit default resolution?

Nowadays X server runs often without /etc/X11/xorg.conf (this is the file you should edit). If this is the case try creating one. If this fails for some reason you can edit X init files, like ~/.xserverrc (you may need to create it).

Post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
