ubuntu 10.0.4 lts editors?
hello
i am new to Linux. Just installed Ubuntu 10.0.4 today for the first time and wondering what full screen text editors are included without having to install anything additional from the internet?
it appears that emacs and vim both require internet access to install via apt-get.
i prefer not to use the VI editor, if I can help it. should i use gedit?
can I use emacs or VIM off-the-shelf?
thank you.

gedit is there by default. You could also use something like Nano from the terminal.

vi, nano and Gedit are pre-installed in Ubuntu. vi and nano are text based editors and Gedit has Graphical Interface.
Look for it in Menu or press Alt+F2 and type gedit. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Open Office is also included if you need a full fledged editor.

How can anyone prefer not to use vi?

I tried that "nano" command.
Reminds me of when I was a younger fellow, and had odd control commands.
Sorta reminds me of WordStar in CP-M.
OOPs !!!
I closed the Nano menu bar, and can't find it again.
Well, Guess I'll just close the terminal and tinker with this some other time.
But, thanks for the tip about an included editor.

Leafpad is what I use the most, looks and feels like Notepad. Abiword has more features, more like Wordpad. IMHO, mature GUIs make the work easier, if application footprint is not an issue.
