I am on Ubuntu 9.04. At first installation, I saw that the display resolution was 1024x768. At some point in time, I had an eye infection and had to go down to 800x600.
Ubuntu recommended writing this resolution to a file, which I did as I am new to Ubuntu.

End result: My higher resolution is gone....permanently. When I read linux forums, I have to make do with alien speak and fish language, just nothing that a sane human can understand.

Telling me to soduku | x-s or whatever says NOTHING as where must I type this? There is no prompt. When I open a terminal it asks for my password but it does NOT record any keystrokes. I simply cannot input my password!

Also, I have NOT set a root password during setup but I keep being told that me, as Mr Administrator, don't have the rights to click here or browse that, nor park on the Pope's driveway. This root thing is r-u-d-e. I have been in IT since 1982 and cut my teeth on Morose-Sacred DOS which was a test of character and gumption like little else, especially when they came with the stupid idea of compressing drives. I started on CP/M, migrated to DOS 3.1, some IBM mainframe work but mainly PC-based LAN's with office and productivity software. I went through the hell of gates and survived it,
now, at my age, I must learn to gobbly-pooh shobbily whoo speech like an infant.

Now, when I just want to set the resolution on my screen, I get challenged by these wiry survivors doing their amazing race while big brother is watching. Twenty pages of script, maybe fifty, did not bring me any closer to getting my screen to work.

Not even US lawyers can produce that much script in one day!

What is the point in using Linux if even the most basic task seems to call for six guys with different hats, an exorcist and an exhumed Einstein to adjust my screen's resolution?

You may never have guessed it but, even though I tire myself in hiding it perfectly, I am about to FLIP here! I have expended all my very expense bandwidth (South African rip-off) as well as all my emotional energy and mental faculties here. Please DO help.......thanks!

    Hi and Welcome !

Before discussing anything, I would suggest you to check here. It's a must read for you, imho.

Regarding root privileges in Ubuntu, this is a link for you. Everything has been explained there. It's a very well written tutorial.

Have you tried settings display through option available in System Menu?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
