Try VLC. It has the best DVD support of all the media players. Make sure you have libdvdcss2 installed and maybe libdvdread too.
These should all be available in your system repos.I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

Does VLC act like it's playing? You hear no sounds at all?

I hear the words "Laser lens cleaner" and my heart sinks, the only time I used one of those, it borked my cdrom athough that was years ago and they may have improved since then!
Can your DVD read data discs and can it play music cds?If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

VLC sees the DVD and the player seems to be moving and the timer moves but no sound and no picture.
I use the DVD to transfer pictures into my computer frequently so I know that it works for that.
I have never put a cd in there though ever since a sony disk unloaded something into my computer and I had to get my last hard drive reformat to get rid of whatever it was.
Because of that I do not play music on my computer anymore.
I tried using the lens cleaner on my suse 10 os but it did not work on there either.Linux registered user # 414321

Try gxine now. VLC and MPlayer couldn't play a few DVDs in my Ubuntu box last year. DVDs and DVD drive were fine and tried a lot settings in both VLC and MPlayer, tried different Drivers for my Graphics Card.
gxine played all DVDs without any problem.
Code:sudo apt-get install gxine gxineplugin

There isn't any doubt in my mind that my computer is haunted by a prank playing gremlin!!!
As instructed by gxine I ran:
sudo apt-get autoremove libglib1.2ldbl libgettext-ruby1.8 libgtk1.2 libgtk1.2-common libgtk2-ruby
and I restarted my computer.
Gxine worked okay and I got video, but no sound, out of VLC.
When I tried gxine I got sound but no picture.
I restarted my computer and gxine worked again.
Is there an explanation as to why my computer does these strange things??Linux registered user # 414321
