Sorry to hear of your troubles; you may have to either downgrade your ubuntu or upgrade your GPU --

The Asus EN8400GS SILENT 512MB works with Ubuntu 8.0.4 Desktop 32 bits.
Really easy just enable the restricted drivers and reboot.

That video card will work just fine.
I'm using the 8400 GS video card in Ubuntu 10.04 64bit and it works flawlessly.
Did you install the Nvidia video driver found in System-Administration-Hardware Drivers ?

Linux doesn't need bleeding edge hardware unlike some other OS's.
You can use hardware that is considered ancient by MS standards.

    driver

How do I get the driver to show up in System-Administration-Hardware Drivers? X won't start with the card installed and Nothing shows up to choose anything with the old card, which is an on board video card. I am currently using kubuntu 64 bit as my mouse is not working in ubuntu and i am told that it is my video card. it works fine in kubuntu 64. I am now downloading ubuntu 64 bit in hopes that i can get a good linux system going. I wanted Ubuntu 32 bit as some of the programs that i wanted to use only comes in 32 bit.

Have you disable On-board card in BIOS and moved existing xorg.conf file?
    Code:
    cd /etc/X11
    sudo mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.n
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Is it 8.04 or 10.04? Doesn't Hardware Drivers option suggest any driver installation for your card?
