[SOLVED] won't boot after upgrade from ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04

    Here's the message I received:

init: ureadahead main process (2393) terminated with status 5
libudev: udev_monitor_new_from_netlink: error getting socket: invalid argument
Mountall: mountall. c3206: assertion failed in main: udev_monitor=udev_monitor_
init: mountall main process (2396) killed by ABRT signal
    general error mounting filesystems.
A maintenance shell will now be started
Control-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system
    Give root password for maintenance
    (or type Control-D to continue.

I finally figured out what my root password was by dumb luck. It just takes me to a root prompt. I'm new to Ubuntu so I don't really know what I'm doing. Does anybody know how to fix this? Any help would be appreciated. I'm actually communicating through a live 10.04 installation disk.

    Welcome to the forums!

A lot changed from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 10.04, so I'd personally recommend backing up any data and then doing a fresh install rather than going for an upgrade.

I agree with ozar. There is a lot of basic differences between 8.04 and 10.04. You should backup data and go for fresh installation only.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I took both of your advice and did a fresh install. Now can someone help me hook up my printer again. It isn't listed among the choices but it was working prior.

HP C4480 All in one. Thanks

I know nothing at all about HP printers, but these two sites might help:

    HP Linux Imaging and Printing

    HP Linux Imaging and Printing

In the interim, maybe someone that has the same printer will chime in with some tips to get your printer going again.

Thanks. I just realized it wasn't plugged into the back of the computer. It detected it immediately.
