    webcam Xubuntu 8.04

    Hi,

I'm a newbie to this forum and linux so hope I'm posting in the right place and giving enough info...

I'm running Xubunto 8.04 with LXDE on a sony vaio with 192 mb memory... it works just about...

I managed to find an old version of skype that works with just audio but wanted to add video - so was wondering if anyone had any ideas about if this would work and if so what type of webcam may be best - don't want to waste money/time on buying wrong one?

    TIA

it's time to upgrade to 10.04 as substancial advances were made in webcam support.
    Bodhi 1.3 & Bodhi 1.4 using E17
Dell Studio 17, Intel Graphics card, 4 gigs of RAM, E17

would you recommend upgrading to 10.04 with the memory limitations - I was thinking about it but just suspected I would be left with an unusable machine (lots of thrashing with only 192 mb of memory)

    just to update this thread...

I bought a webcam from TESCOs for GBP 6.97 and it wasn't even a proper make or anything 'TESCO value techweb1' - I was half expecting it not to work and even less expecting to be able to get any help on it...

(TESCO is like Target in usa)

It worked out of the box...

    Compact USB CIF webcam
    CMOS sensor
    352 x 240 pixels at 30 fps
Compatible with Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, Vista

...and now Xubuntu 8.04 with no driver needed... and works with Skype with no additional tweaking...
