When I insert a non-software CD into the CD drive eg. music, movie CD it wont play.
When I insert a non-software CD into the CD drive eg. music, movie CD it wont play the music or film. I am using an old-ish computer using ubuntu 10.04 what's wrong?

Have you installed ubuntu-restricted-extras packages?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

You may also need to install libdvdcss2. Bear in mind that in some jurisdictions, this is of questionalble legality

Sorry for not replying i have now installed ubuntu restricted formats still doesn't work :S

i think the problem is the old CD reader on the computer so hardware issue ill probally buy an external drive there not too much.

Can you play the CD with VLC (device should be /dev/sr0)?
If yes it's not your CD drive but missing ripping packages for Gnome (or KDE or whatever you're using). Note that audio CDs don't have a file system like data CDs hence they can't be mounted but only ripped or played directly.
