    Cannot read SD Card

    Hello everyone,

I know this isn't really a Ubuntu question, but I think this is the best place to get help with this issue.

So basically I have an SD Card that I use with primarily with my Wii. This morning I decided to install the HomeBrew Channel on my Wii (I don't think it matters if you know what this is). While trying to run an application my Wii froze, and since then my SD Card has been unreadable, my Wii however is fine.

I assumed I could just pop this card into a computer and format it. There is nothing on the card I need to recover. When I stuck the card into my room mate's computer running Windows (she's the only one who has a SD card slot) Windows Explorer freezes, and remains frozen until I remove the card. I tried using the Disk Management to format the card, but it also freezes upon inserting it.

The only idea I could come up with is booting to my Ubuntu disc on my room mates computer, in the mode that lets me run Ubuntu right off the CD-ROM, and try to format it here. When I insert the card an item called 'SD/MMC Drive' appears but there's no option to format when I right click on it.

Now my linux is a bit rusty, but I thought I could do it by typing "sudo mkdosfs -F 32 -v /dev/sda1". The status seems to indicate it was successful, but the issue still persists.

If anyone has any suggestions to help me resolve this issue, whether it uses Ubuntu, Windows, or even my Wii, I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hello and Welcome.
I sure hope you know what you are doing and I really hope I am wrong here but the command you posted could have been a disaster. /dev/sda1 is the first hard drive, first partition.....if that command worked, you may have just toasted your hard drive.
    sudo mkdosfs -F 32 -v /dev/sda1

Anyhoo, if everything is all good, I would try booting the LiveCD again but this time after you insert the SD card into the slot...issue the dmesg command and see what it has to say for itself.
    Code:
    dmesg

    Thanks Mike,

I ran that command you suggested. I copied the results into a text file and will attach it to this post.

At this point I've determined that /dev/mmcblk0 is my SD Card by inserting a working SD Card, and viewing it's properties (should have done that in the beginning). I've tried to format it, as well as use fdisk or gparted to repartition it. Here are the results.

    When I try sudo mkdosfs -F 32 -v /dev/mmcblk0 I get
    mkdosfs 2.11 (12 Mar 2005)
/dev/mmcblk0 has 4 heads and 16 sectors per track,
    logical sector size is 512,
    using 0xf8 media descriptor, with 2052 sectors;
file system has 2 32-bit FATs and 1 sector per cluster.
FAT size is 16 sectors, and provides 1988 clusters.
Volume ID is 4c9d0961, no volume label.
mkdosfs: failed whilst writing reserved sector

When I try sudo fdisk /dev/mmcblk0 I get:
    Unable to read /dev/mmcblk0

When I try sudo gparted /dev/mmcblk0 I get a window that shows 512 B of unallocated space (this is a 1GB card). When I try to make a new partition I get the error Error while trying to create partition table

    Any thoughts?

PS: You were right about /dev/sda1. When I used to use Gentoo the main HD was hda, not sda. I assumed anything that didn't start with HD was ok to format. Lucky for me this computer is an Acer, and the first partition was the recovery partition, not Windows. I'll exercise a bit more patience from here on.

I was unable to attach the text file (it was too large). So I'll post it here.

Glad you didn't hose your system, FWIW, Gentoo now uses /sda.
Which version of Ubuntu are you using? Can you get the latest version? See these bug reports, they may or may not help you.

I'll try downloading a new image and see if I have any better luck. The disc I have is about a year old (probably less though). Those bug reports do describe the messages I'm getting when running dmesg. Maybe I've just hit two separate issues.

Thanks again for the help. I'll let you know the results once I try, which will be tomorrow.

Those bug reports stop at sector 0. Yours is different. Considering the fact it fails on different computers I'd say this SD card is probably gone bad.

Technically it hasn't been tested on more than one computer, unless you count the Wii. I did try it with a fresh burn of Ubuntu and the same thing still happens.

The thing that really bothers me about this is the timing of when it happened. So here is my next question to everyone. Could my Wii freezing or some software corruption cause an SD card to die like this? Or is it more likely the card failed at that moment causing my Wii to freeze? Could this application do the exact same thing to another SD card?

The device got frelled. Get a new one.
