Angry Linux Ubuntu 10 can't access windows shares

Hello - I am running Linux Ubuntu 10.04 and I currently have this computer and another Windows 7 PC connected together in the same workgroup. When I look at the Network on the Ubuntu File Browser, I can see the windows 7 pc there, but when I try to open it, I get the message Password Required - it wants a username, password and domain (the domain box is filled in with the workgroup name). Whatever set of credentials I try to input, the box just pops up again asking for password. Password protected sharing is disabled on the windows 7 pc and I have even tried disabling Windows firewall to no effect. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux and am therefore completely stuck - what I really want is to access a shared printer connected to the Windows 7 pc from the Linux machine.

    Any help would be great!!

    Thanks

you said password is disabled, did you try just pressing enter without entering any information in?

also, i'm not sure samba supports windows 7 file sharing version anyway

    Hi,

I have tried it with no username + password, but the connect button becomes greyed out - it will not let me try to connect unless all 3 boxes (domain, username and password) are filled in. As for windows 7 incompatability, I have no idea! Anyone got any other clue?

Lightbulb Is your folder properly shared in Win7 ?

Well, it worked fine for me. Here is what I did :

On the win7 box, I created a folder smbshare. I right clicked on it > advanced sharing > then I added my Win7 user with full control, and deleted the "everyone read" permission.

I made sure my Win7 had a fixed ip.

Then from the linux box, I typed smb://192.168.x.x/smbshare in Nautilus address bar.

(you may also type a hostname if you have put it in /etc/hosts)

It prompted me for my user and password, then I don't remember if I typed nameofwinpc\username or just username and the password. Then I was prompted if I wanted to store the password in the keyring on the linux box. I answered yes + I also saved the bookmark in Nautilus, and now I can mount my windows folder on the linux box in one click.

    Cheers,

    M.E.

    Hello
    I have made a discovery:

I also have another laptop in the workgroup running Windows 7 premium. My Ubuntu will happily go into that computer and view all the shares using the password for a user from that pc, but the desktop (running 7 professional) will not accept any form of username / password to view its shared folders! Any further thoughts??

sounds like you have a configuration issue on the windows 7 professional machine, since ubuntu shouldn't care since both are running the same version of the file sharing software

Ah - that makes sense! Could you possibly tell me exactly what all the settings would need to be on the Windows 7 Professional so Linux can access it??

    Thanks for your help!

Maybe it's an issue with SMB3 which Microsoft introduced with Windows 7. I'm not sure whether Samba 3.5 already supports SMB3 (I think not, maybe Samba 4 does) or if it's just SMB2. You could try disabling SMB3 in the Windows registry: Solution for vista and windows 7 SMB network share
You shouldn't need to disable SMB2 as well since Samba 3.5 supports it but if you still encounter problems also try disabling SMB2.

hi - i tried the Samba registry fix, and no joy - I didn't think it would work, since Ubuntu will connect to the other Home Premium Laptop, it just keeps popping up with the username/domain/password box if i try to connect to the Window s7 Professional pc. Very odd!

Did you guys ever manage to get this problem sorted out? If so please can you advise me how to sort it out.

I am having exactly the same problem!

Cannot access Windows 7 Ultimate (keeps asking for username, domain, password)

However I can access my laptop which has Windows 7 Home Premium on it.

I checked the Windows 7 Ultimate system has AVG Firewall installed on it, i disabled the firewall - but this didn't make any difference.
I checked the credentials on the Windows 7 system and entered the exact same username/password I would use to login on that machine, but it still keeps popping up with the authentication dialog box in ubuntu.

    I am using Ubuntu 10.10.

    Please help!

ALSO TAKE NOTE: Prior to this intallation of ubuntu, I had installed it using "wubi" to test it out. The networking worked fine once I entered the username and password in the dialog. So i was very satisfied and then decided to install a fresh copy of ubuntu completely taking off my windows. So basically, it worked fine in the wubi install but not in the actual one - just in case that helps?
