2 versions of Ubuntu in GRUB
I just did a reboot today and noticed I could pick from 4 things
Ubuntu numbersnumbersnumber.25 and Ubuntu numbersnumbersnumbers.24
and their fail safe modes
I'm guessing it's because of my last update.
2 questions
1. Does this mean I was updated to 10.10?
2. How can I remove the .24 version from GRUB?
ALSO if I am not in 10.10 yet, is it "safe" to? Will I loose my desktop? The features don't seem like enough to want to lose the work I put into making everything pretty

its just an update to the kernel you have installed, if everything is working fine you can uninstall old one with synaptic package manager
also, 10.10 isn't out till the end of the month, that being said, 10.04 is on LTS so you won't have to upgrade for 3 years if you don't want to
- 10-05-2010 #3No.1. Does this mean I was updated to 10.10?
It's a kernel update not a GRUB update. You have two kernels now. x.x.x.24 and x.x.x.25. Use latest version, x.x.x.25 and if everything works fine ( Display, Wireless etc. ), uninstall x.x.x.24 version using Synaptic package manager.2. How can I remove the .24 version from GRUB?
Do not upgrade for atleast a few weeks. 10.10 has not been released yet.ALSO if I am not in 10.10 yet, is it "safe" to? Will I loose my desktop? It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

OK, so I ran the CAT command and all it did was tell me what I already knew.
So how do I get into Syn pk mgr and what do I tell it?
I am five days into my Ubuntu experience. Forgive my lack of knowledge. I have only been working with computers siince 1964.

Do you want to remove kernel or downgrade Ubuntu OS?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I originally installed 10.4 but a couple days ago it upgraded to what is apparently
10.4.2
I want the upgrade but I don't want to see four options at bootup time.
As the original question persists, how does one eliminate the two extraneous options if we are satisfied with the upgrade? All it does is take up space. And why are the two old options still on there anyway?

You uninstall the old ones in Synaptic. I think this means uninstalling anything that starts with linux-image except the newest one. I'm sure someone will confirm that.
Should the new kernel prove completely incompatible with your hardware (hoses your system) you can still boot the old one. Handy eh?If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
