Gaming on Linux
I have installed Oblivion on Ubuntu and I have done all that I can but it is still not running. I will say right off that I am new to Linux but so far I love it and I am trying to learn as much as I can on my own but my learning curve has hit a wall. It runs so much smoother for me than I was ever able to get XP or Vista no matter how much tweaking I did and this is the only thing I have not been able to do with Linux. I'd imagine id would be great for gaming as well, and I've heard that as well.
So anyways I've installed Wine 9.0 (supposed to be the smoothest for Oblivion in particular) and it opened and installed Oblivion to my computer no problem, but when I try to run Oblivion it opens a window for a brief moment and then force-closes in about a half second and I cant get any further than that.
Previously I was running Ubuntu 9.10 and had installed Wine and I was able to open all the way to the main menu until I clicked "New Game" then it would force-close as well. Now I am running the most recent version of Ubuntu.
Now, Ive found an article for Linux on THE UNOFFICIAL ELDER SCROLLS PAGES site and it seems as though it would be pretty helpful but its not really in "English" as far as I understand. I am hoping that someone here can help me through this and maybe dumb it down for me because I am getting nowhere. Thanks for any help.

Hello and Welcome.
Have you tried opening a terminal window and launch the winecfg command. It will offer you a lot of options, so fiddle with it and see if it works.
Code:winecfg

Well now that I've spent some time in the configuration and getting my version of wine up-to-date, I am able to fully start the game up, start a new game, watch the opening video, etc. However, once the actual game starts up where I should be able to control my character, my screen is black. I can hear my character running around and jumping when I tell him to, and I can open and see all of my screens (pause, inventory, etc.). As far as I know all of my graphics settings are where they should be (I may be mistaken), so what would cause this?

I don't play this game but from the Wine web page the one user mentions that you
need to run OblivionLauncher.exe first otherwise you will get crashes.
I'm sure you have read all the comments found here;
WineHQ - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion 1.2.x
They pretty much have all the info and tricks needed to get it up and running.
I've also have seen problems with games running in Wine if no-cd exe's, cheat patches or other cracks are used. Borks them up real good.
One thing you didn't mention is what graphics card you are using and if you have shaders and anti-aliasing turned off in the game.
ATI cards need a special .ini file otherwise they will display a solid color on the screen which is what seems to be your problem.
The .ini file can be found in that Wine link
Good luck and glad your enjoying Ubuntu.

Actually Ive never seen that site, thanks a ton for putting that link up for me. Im going to mess around with that and dig through my paperwork to find out what graphics card I have. But that should be really helpful, thanks.

Wow sorry to bring this back it really looks like ive been slacking and I'll be honest I kind of got sidetracked by Fallout New Vegas, then AC Brotherhood and then GT5 on the PS3 and just didnt really even try to figure this out. But now Im back at it, found the .ini code Im supposed to "put in" but I have no idea where. Ive been in Wine configuration and all the files installed with Oblivion and even both options menus for the game (I know obviously not my solution but thats about as lost as I am right now). So Im still looking but if i can get a simple solution from on here that'd be even better, thanks.

OK I found Oblivion.ini and I have placed the code I found into it and it did nothing to fix my black screen. I placed two other ini codes in as well (disable intro video and disable begin game menu) and they didnt work either. I still had both videos. Now I definitely dont know why the ini codes didn't work and no sites Ive been reading on say any steps that would explain why! So please lmk if you do!
