There are a ton of distros faster than Ubuntu:
Crunchbang
Arch
Slack
Puppy
Zenwalk
And some Ubuntu derivatives that are faster:
Lubuntu
Xubuntu

Try Arch, Crux, Gentoo, or Slackware - they all usually feel pretty fast. On the other hand, any distro should be about as fast as another if they have the same system packages and are configured the same.
You might have some kind of configuration problem if Ubuntu feels slow.oz

I'm using ubuntu 10.04 on a VM and it seems pretty fast to me, even over remote connections
I agree with techie, that it is very subjective, what are you experiencing as slow?

Mostly its the browser, (Opera) but Ubuntu itself takes a longer time to load when I open a Program or application. And netspeed doesnt open, I guess im just comparing it to Win7 too much, I understand Win7 has taken alot of money to develop.
