Random logging out in 10.10
Ever since I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, I've been having this problem. Every now and then, for seemingly no reason at all, the screen will go black and after a few seconds I find myself at the login screen. I've kept track of when it happens and there is seemingly no pattern to it; sometimes it will happen when I'm watching a video, sometimes it just happens when I'm browsing the internet, and sometimes it happens when I'm not doing anything. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Re: Random logging out in 10.10
[Sorry, no answers, just you're not alone, and some more details to check out]
I have the same problem with it in KUbuntu 10.10, 64 bit upgrade. I also tried KUbuntu 10.10 with a 'Live DVD' in VirtualBox, and got the randomly being logged out error a lot more frequently towards the end of me using it. I thought I just didn't set aside enough RAM for it, and didn't investigate. Turns out it will still happens in the installed KUbuntu, but it doesn't quite seam to happen the same way, or as frequent. In the virtualized 'live' version, it happened more frequently as I kept using it, it doesn't seam to be doing that as I'm using the non-live, non-virtualized version. (but I could be wrong, I just updated two days ago) Maybe it's two separate issues, I don't know.
Hope this helps somebody figure this out...
p.s. I have a DualCore2 2.2GHz with 4GiB of RAM on my computer.

In my case it seams to be happening a little after logging in after a suspend.
[Although, I haven't tested this enough to be 100% sure]

I haven't had this problem for a few days now, so I guess it may have been fixed.

Depends on what version of Ubuntu you are using ie i386 or 64 bit and the chipset that is being used on your motherboard ie Intel or AMD. The 64bit version is built for AMDs in mind not Intel. If the bug fixed itself it must have automatically updated it self and ran the debugger for AMD64 version.

And now the problem has returned. It is the 64 bit version, and it is Intel, so I guess that is the problem. Rather annoying that the Ubuntu website doesn't mention that the 64 bit version is for AMD.

In most cases most arguments were not to use the 64 bit version on google searches, etc. Having an intel processor I wasn't confused that the 64 bit version was for amd. I think the iso file had amd in it's name.

Well that is an easy fix. Back up or store all the important files you want to save on an external HD or in MSW if you are dual booting. Then go and download the i386 version of Ubuntu and make a live cd aka ISO image and install it once it is burned to a cd or dvd.
The typical crashes that are experienced with any Linux OS depends what version of OS you running on your system and the processor that is running your system. If you have Intel processors dont DL and install the 64 bit iso DL the i386 iso. If your are running an AMD you can run both the i386 or the 64 amd iso. However in any case, it is usually the i386 ISO that is the ¨stable¨ version and is the initial release version.
I hope this is helpful to you in the future.
FYI... If you are running a 64 AMD version, Ubuntu does have an ¨AMD64 debugger¨ in Synaptic as well as the Ubuntu Software Center that you can install. I suggest installing Ubuntu Tweak and running through some of the updates on this program. It is really an Ubuntu users best friend!
