hi - video editing
ok so first of all I'm new to Linux but so far its blowing the doors off windows as far as speed and not ****ing up goes.... I decided to try Ubuntu 10.10 after I had enough audio driver errors on my Acer netbook ( it came with windows wtf why errors) to drive me crazy. anyway since I installed Ubuntu its ran better then when it was new my question arises here tho. I need to do some basic video editing (combine a few avi files, add transitions, add effects, etc) I don't need some end all to do all editor. just something basic like the windows. video editor thingy was. so far I've tried pitivi which crashes, open soft which also seems to dislike me, and kdenlive which shows some promise but seems to be slow and needs libmp3lame and I tried to install it and while my software manager thing says its installed kden says its not... I wanted to try lives editor but my terminal abilities are almost non-existent. is there an editor I haven't tried that could be what I'm looking for? is there a way to fix kden? I just want to edit the video and put it on Facebook. I'm willing to learn and I'm not a computer idiot just a Linux one LOL. I really Dont want go back to windows cause ill have to reinstall it and even when I do that with the disc Acer sent me windows makes a screeching noise even when then sound is off and locks up... meh

I don't do any video editing so am not familiar with the different types of software. You could check this link:
Top 5 Linux Video Editor Software
or google linux video editors. You should get a number of hits.
Your post is hard to read. Poor punctuation, run-on sentences and one paragraph run together when there should have been several. Better written posts usually get better responses.

You might try to install Cinelerra. It's a full-featured video editing tool, suitable for professional work, and not the simplest to use, but if kdenlive is giving you problems this might be the best option for you.

It should be in the package manager so you shouldn't need to do anything on the command-line to install it. I know that it is installed as part of the Ubuntu Studio distribution. Unfortunately, Studio is not yet at 10.10, just 10.04 and earlier. Also, kdenlive and a bunch of other tools are included as part of the Ubuntu Studio edition. So, if you aren't fixated on 10.10, try the 10.04 version of Ubuntu Studio. In any case, 10.04 is LTS (long term support), but 10.10 isn't, so you will be getting better support over the long term for 10.04 distributions of Ubuntu.

thank you. I thought long term support meant it was being supported still but was outdated. I was looking on the internet for the editor and ended up with a tar.gs file with terminal instructions, but if I can get it in the manager or with a copy of Ubuntu then great. I'll try that as soon as I get home thanks.

If you go to this page it will have the info you need to install it in Ubuntu
Cinelerra :: a video editor and compositor for Linux
If you are not sure how to add locations to your repositories just click on the link they provide and install it with Gdebi Package Installer. In other words Install and not Save.
Then open a terminal and run this update command;
sudo apt-get update
Then open Synaptic and do a search for cinelerra.
Mark it for install and apply.
You can now find it in your menu under Sound & Video
I've also used avidemux for cutting out parts of a movie then join the movie back together. It's reliable and is easy to use.
You can find it in your Synaptic Package Manager.
Good Luck.

I haven't used it, but have read good things about PiTiVi.
