Problems connecting Ubuntu 10.4 and Windows 7 laptops

I actually have two problems (which may be related).

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a old Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo La1703 and Windows 7 on a new Dell Inspiron 1545. I only have one broadband internet dongle, so I would like to share the connection (preferably via wireless ad hoc connection, but lan would work too). The dongle is run with a program that comes with it and works fine in both Windows and Ubuntu (except that the Network Manager in Ubuntu doesn't realise that there is an internet connection).

Yesterday morning I managed ONCE to make a wireless ad hoc connection and was able to use the dongle connected on the Windows machine from the Ubuntu one (using WEP security).

Since I wasn't able to reproduce this I tried with a Ethernet cable. I plugged it in and and was surfing smoothly the whole evening.

This morning I couldn't connect the computers any more. Neither with nor without cable. When the cable is plugged in the Ubuntu machine recognises a connection, but fails to connect. The windows machine just says "Unidentified Network".

I don't know what I did to make the connection disappear or why my laptops refuse to communicate like friends any more. I've been trying the whole day to make them kiss and make up, but they are really stubborn.

Has anybody any ideas on how to restore their friendship (wit or without cable).

I'm posting off a windows 7 laptop that shares it's wireless with my main box (dual boot win7 and Ubuntu)... in the process of moving house so haven't got a hardwired connection for my main pc at the mo.

On the Win7 laptop, go to Network Connections -> Right Click on your mobile internet connection -> Properties -> Sharing Tab -> Tick 'Share this internet connection' and select your LAN connection on the drop down.

Click ok and you're good to go for hardwiring the two together. I find in Ubuntu it sometimes needs a nudge to pick up that Auth Eth0 is connected, but once you select that it works fine...
YMMV but hopefully that should do the trick for hardwiring at least!

Right now I'm working on my Ubuntu machine and am connected to the internet through my Windows machine via a ad hoc wireless connection.

The thing is that I have managed to set up a working network when the windows machine gives me an option of turning on internet sharing at the end of the set-up wizard. The problem is that this option isn't always there.

Does somebody know when I get that option. (In Windows -> Network and sharing centrer -> Set up a new network or connection -> Set up a wireless ad hoc network ... WEP security ... and sometimes in the last window there is a large button with the option to turn on internet sharing, why isn't it always there)

So Gilbert is it a Windows 7 problem ? An Ubuntu one ?
This things you'll have to figure first.

Well, so far I'm not exactly sure. I've been playing around for a bit, and it seems that they are both working fine (Windows-Windows and Ubuntu-Ubuntu). So the problem would be compatibility. And my first guess would be Windows.

I am now able to connect the computers, but only If I first connect the Windows machine to the internet and the setting up a NEW ad hoc connection and after that connecting the Ubuntu machine to that network.

I'll let you know if I make any progress, but for now I'm just happy that it works, I may have time to look into it later next week.
