This is a basic description of how to use synaptic package manager to install programs. How to Install Software in Linux - Using the Synaptic Package Manager
Synaptic package manager and the ubuntu repositories will have a wide selection of programs which will work with ubuntu. Good luck and have fun.

Hello and welcome aboard, Lawrence!

Just in case you should need it, the Ubuntu website has a pretty good HowTo for using Synaptic, too:

→ no private messages requesting computer support - post them on the forums!

To run a program, you can do it by two ways.
The first way, is by double clicking on the executable.
The second way is doing it in terminal by typing './program-name'
If a program is not executing, right click on and click the permisions tab and toggle "Allow executing file as program'... then try again.
In regards to your download, most browsers by default download to the 'Download' directory in your home folder ('/home/(user)/Downloads/').
