Apple products connect, but don't mount. HELP

Ok, i posted about this a couple months ago, but didn't get anywhere. I have some new info, so I'd like to see if maybe someone here can help!

i have an iPhone 3G and an ipod Touch. i also have a friends iPhone 3G. This issue is multiple devices so I know it's not an issue with the devices. used to, i plug my iDevice in and Ubuntu automatically mounts it. Now, nothing at all happens. So, here's what I have done so far. Ubuntu can see them, but nothing happens and I don't know what to do with that.

    Ubuntu 10.04
    Code:
    Linux Ubuntu 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 20:26:08 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
When I plug my iPhone it and run dmesg | tail i get
    Code:
[ 2348.832075] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
    [ 2348.970524] usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 4 choices
Dunno what configuration #1 is, but I guess it's no right. Further, if I run lsusb | grep Apple it correctly identifies my device:
    Code:
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 05ac:1292 Apple, Inc. iPhone 3G
If i run ideviceinfo, i get a TON if info including my iDevices model, UUID, serial #, etc etc....several screens of info.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled libimobiledevices and even tried iFuse. It used to work, and I did nothing that owuld have changed it's behavior. My only thought is something that was included in an update at some point caused this, but Ihave no way to track that down. Any ideas? Thanks!

As I may have mentioned in your previous post, only my wife has any iDevices in our house, and she won't let me near them! Sorry. Hopefully some other lurker her will be able to help you get sorted out. Maybe one of those pesky iUpdates has broken their ability to mount on Linux systems?

LOL, not even for "testing purposes"?

As for update, definitely not an update on the iDevices. They are still running the same FW as before. I haven't updated to the newest. So that leaves an update on Ubuntu.
    Thanks

She gets grumpy if I even look at her stuff. She says that I break things... In truth, I am famous (or infamous) for breaking computer hardware/software just by standing around them. Of course, that's why I made a good career in the design and implementation of large-scale, high-availability enterprise systems. If it doesn't break for me, it won't break for the customer either!

Here's another tidbit. When this started, I also lost the SSH option under the GUI (places>connections) but I found I can still still SSH into the devices using "ssh root@ip" in terminal and can connect with no problem.
