Can you not do it in the System/Appearance menu. Or do I misunderstand your question?

System -> Preferences -> Display. There you have option to change resolution and refresh rate.

mine needs to install a proprietary NVIDIA graphic driver in order to get the optimum resolution.

Go to system>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager, and enter Nvidia into the search box. This will bring up different Nvidia drivers in the repository.
