Need help installing starbase wlan usb network adapter

I have found instructions but they are not working. I am new to Ubuntu and have only had a few classes that dealt with Fedora and CentOS. So I am rather new to Linux in general. The drivers say they are compatible with linux kernel 2.6 and later so I am going to assume they should work with ubuntu--am I correct in this assumption? If so, when one installs anything in ubuntu should one be set as the admin? If anyone has straightforward instructions I would appreciate it. Thanks.

    Hi there,

We're going to need more information if we are going to help you. Can you provide links to the USB device and the instructions you were trying to follow.

Then can you give details about your exact problem including any error messages, and how far you got with the instructions.

You probably will need to be root to install the drivers. Modifying the kernel is, naturally, not something you want everyone doing.

Let us know how you get on.
To be good, you must first be bad. "Newbie" is a rank, not a slight.

Frankly, I think the problem is with the software drivers and not being compatible with Ubuntu. The error comes along when I run the make command and it has more to do with not finding what it should be finding.

When I run the lsusb and lsmod it shows the adapter sitting there. (Realtek or RTL8187)

I will probably either try it with Fedora or just go back to Windows. Thanks for any suggestions I've received.
