    Nvidia driver won't install

    Hi guys,

I've got some problems while using the Nvidia driver for my videocard.

    Some system information:
    Intel core i5 430M
    4 GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia Geforce GT 325M 1 GB
    HDD 500 GB, 5400 rpm
    Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit
    (Windows 7 64 bit)

I installed the newest nvidia driver(260.19.21), using the guide on this site:
Installing NVIDIA 3D Drivers Linux article
Link(not allowed to post URLs, so I cut it in pieces)
    http:/ /w ww.linuxforums.org/articles/installing -nvidia-3d-drivers_50 .html

And I tried many other methods(System, Administration, Additional Drivers), other driver versions and so on.

The installation succeeds, but when i'm trying to reboot it wont start gdm. It will boot in Text-only(CTRL+ ALT +F1), and it won't let me use gdm. Restarting gdm, startx, all of them won't work. The only way is to boot in recovery and restore the default xorg.conf file.

Nvidia card is working under windows, so it isn't broken.

Does anybody has an idea how to get the nvidia driver to work?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello and Welcome.
You might have the Open source nouveau driver installed and that will block the NVIDIA driver. See this link.

You're right, I'm using the Nouveau driver. But the nvidia installer said it would disable nouveau. But I'll try again without Nouveau installed.

I'll report the results here soon!

That didn't work. After installing i used "sudo nvidia-xconfig", but also that didn't work.

    xorg.conf file:
    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
    # nvidia-xconfig: version 260.19.06 (buildmeister@builder101) Mon Sep 13 04:59:45 PDT 2010

This is the one created by Nvidia. Adding "Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"" to the file won't help. I'm getting a blank screen or text-only mode. Additional drivers tells me that the nvidia-driver is in use, but it won't let me start a game or use desktop effects.
That's because the xorg.conf file is empty at the moment.

    Any more ideas?

The installer does say it will disable the other driver but it failed on my machine. Did you try the link I posted?
    Code:
    sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Yes, I tried it. It's uninstalled now. But it still doesn't work. I think it's because of the Intel HD graphics.

At the moment the Intel driver is working(compiz etc), Nvidia driver is uninstalled.

So the Intel is built in right? On my machine, when I added a new video card, I went into the BIOS and disabled the internal card. Then loading the driver should be much easier.

Yeah, the Intel is the Intel HD Graphics. I don't know if you know much about notebooks, but cheaper notebooks only have the Intel HD graphics as videocard. I have both.

I've looked in the bios, but couldn't find anything about switching videocard. So xorg.conf should depend which is being loaded.
