Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit installation fails

    Hello all,

I have been using ubuntu 10.10 32 bit. I thought of giving 64 bit a try. I downloaded the ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 from the ubuntu website and burned it in to a cd. Then i boot from cd. But unfortuntely i am getting terminal instead of installtion or try options. It says : General errormounting filesystem" and then Lots of " Authentication failure". I typed startx in the terminal but i didnt get any gui.

I am using hp dv6 laptop with windows 7 preinstalled. Core i5 processer, nvidia g105m graphics card and 4gb ram. Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit works fine.
I don't know the whether the problem is because of my graphics card. But it works fine for me in 32 bit. The driver i am using is of version 260.19..06. Please somebody help me. I really want to use 64 bit OS.

    Welcome to the forums!

If you haven't done so already, try the "alternate installer" because it often works where the liveCD installer fails, especially with graphics card/driver issues. Note that it's a text only installer and will not run as a liveCD.

I believe you must have a 64bit compatible processor in order to use 64bit applications.
    Do you run Windows 64bit?

So I have had issues like this before with the live cd. The problem was not with the hardware but burning the ISO too fast. So the Live CD try to make another copy but keep the recorder speed low like say 8x. Your CPU is 64 bit capable BTW.

Thanks to all for the reply.

I burned my disc @ a rate of 20X. May be that created the problem. Also will try the alternative download option. I will update the thread after that.
