The CDs I burn don't work no matter what I do

I am Linux user for 7 months now . I got my 1st Ubuntu CD from Shipit .

After that I tried to download and burn and share to my friends but that became nighmare for me .

Out of 20 Cds only 3 worked . I am not a fool I was....

1 Burning CDs at minimum speed (in my case 8X)

    2 checking md5sum

3 used 3 different burners ,different OS( xp vista and 7)

4 using different softwares (nero 7 & free iso burner )

5 using CDs from different manufactures

    6 Using 3 different computers

    But nothing worked for me

    I tried other distros too

    what is wrong .

What success rate you assume when you burn a Linux iso ...???

I dont know why its happening to me any suggestions...?

I have yet to burn a coaster. Thing is. I keep my Cdrw and DVDrw drives clean.
I would look into maybe running one of these to clean the lens on your drive.

Same here, no coasters and I've burned hundreds, maybe even more than a thousand CDs. I usually don't even worry about the burning speed and they all work. The only precautions that I take are to use good drives, good media, good downloads for burning, and I don't do a lot of other tasks on the machine while burning. Not sure which or if all of those items are helping with my good fortune, but I'll keep using that plan until the burns start coasterizing themselves.

Hmm, coasterizing... maybe that's a new word, but not sure.

Maybe try upgrading the firmware on your burner if there is an update available for it.

Roky and Ozar have a LOT of experience with this, as do I. There are a number of issues to be aware of.

    1. Not all media will play in all devices. Some devices will require firmware updates to handle non-mainstream (or even major brands) of media. I've had this problem more than once in the past.
    2. See number one. I recently sent some DVD's to a friend that I burned. They played flawlessly on my PC and regular DVD player attached to my TV. On his systems, no go! I was using a cheaper (but good) second-tier media. I then burned the videos on to first tier (Verbatim) media, and he had no problems playing them whatsoever! He sent the originals back to me, and I verified that I could still play them without problems, so there wasn't any shipping damage to account for his difficulty in playing the discs.

So, use major-brand media which are most likely to work on any device. Also, don't use Memorex. I have had more problems with Memorex media than any other tier-one product. My best results have been with Verbatim. They cost more, but in 5+ years I have had no coasters as a result.

Finally, DO NOT burn your discs at the maximum speed. If you disc does 16x, burn at 8x or 12x max (for DVD's). For CD's that are capable of 52x, burn at 40x or less.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

I have had really good luck with Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden media. FYI, Taiyo Yuden are considered the "Rolls Royce" of digital media. In fact, they are the manufacturer of most top-end media from other vendors. I also have had good luck with TDK CD media (not DVD, however).

That's what I use for all serious burning efforts. For those soon to be disposed of burns I generally use Verbatim, or TDK.

I have recently had a batch of CDs that appeared to burn OK but were coasters. Maybe try a different batch of disks?
