You mentioned something about "copying files" and "running Windows XP", so I'm a little confused. Are you booting directly from the Ubuntu liveCD the way installation was intended, or are you using some other installation method?

You can't just copy the files. You need to run the liveCD. I download the ISO and from that you create the liveCD with the tool mentioned on the download page.

This is incorrect. There is sure to be a way to copy files that are in the liveCD session of Ubuntu.
If it doesn't let you copy, try running as root, and likely it still won't, so just create a new textfile inside of your external HD, then copy and paste the contents of the file.

That is how I copied the one of the files controlling the mounted disks and what is mountable.
