    open a terminal.
    type
    lspci

    which will tell the cards that the system sees as being installed. Then post that. Hopefully, you will see something like "Audio device:" or "Multimedia audio controller:" Furthermore, that HDMI should show up, but in addition to the sound device that you really want.

    Is your sound device built into the motherboard? I have a Gigabyte as well and the sound chip is made by Realtek, so look for something like that in the results of the command. Your motherboard should have the Realtek ALC888 (pretty sweet!) in it.

    If there is no Realtek showing in the lspci results, then you might have to intercept the BIOS as you reboot to turn on the built in motherboard feature of this chip.

    Usually, out of the box, the motherboard has its sound device turned on.

    Next, is ALSA turned on? this is a device manager that actually commands and feeds audio to the chips... type:
    alsactl

    which should ask you
    alsactl: Specify command...

    And finally, PulseAudio should be turned on. This is the Operating System software that smoothly interconnects your audio player, the sounds from the OS, Website music and everything to the ALSA interface. Type:
    pulseaudio

    and it should complain:
    E: pid.c: Daemon already running.
    E: main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

    or something like that.

    If the ALSA isn't there, then you need to open the
    System->
    Administartion->
    Synaptic Package Manager

    program from the menu and install ALSA

    Likewise for pulseaudio.

    Good luck.

    all coedecs are installed .

    my sound card is onboard .

    It would be best if you could post the exact output of the command above because we need more than just the device name. The PCIID's and drivers in use will also be listed.
    Code:
    sudo lspci -knn

    Well, it's showing the device and drivers loaded. From what I can tell, this is the correct driver.
    Do you have a volume control in the system tray? If so, click it and make sure it isn't muted. Double check speaker connections to PC and to the wall outlet if applicable.
    Open a terminal window and try
    Code:
    sudo alsamixer
    Again, make sure it's not muted.

    I just noticed the other device is using the same module, I'm not sure if this could be a problem or not. Do you need both devices plugged in?

    AHA! That screen shot says that ALSA is being asked to use the video card's output. Also, all of our lspci commands wouldn't have found the Soundblaster, because it's on a USB port (The memory-stick shaped connection) as opposed to PCI (which is on the motherboard only) and lspci is a command that can only find those PCI cards.

    by transitivity, you could try lsusb to find the USB headphone dongle, but that is not the problem. The system is recognizing that port. Since you get some output so far you might be able to get it working as follows:

    So

    Just click on that panel for "Output" that you got to from System->Preferences->Sound from the upper-left menu and select the "Creative USB Headset..." button. Then your sound should come out the headphones. Note that this panel is also the same one that you got to by pressing the "speaker" icon on the menu/task bar then asking for "preferences..."

    Select it back to the HDMI selection for the on-board sound jack.

    Note that there should be no sound when you plug in to the S/PDIF jack, because that can (usually) only be a digital connection to special speakers that are capable of digital communication.
