    computer shut down

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on a gateway desktop. I installed 10.04 in april of 2010. Its fully updated. About two week ago it would hang on shut down. The ubuntu logo would stay lite, the keyboard and mouse shut down, it sounds like the harddrive is shut down but the power light and the fans still run requiring a hard shut down. I used the terminal to do the shut down same problem. I reinstalled ubuntu no change, I tried ubuntu 1010 no change. I have XP windows on a second hard drive it shut down normal. I installed pc linos it shut down normal. I've check for bug reports and there is indication of other similar problems relating to open office. I sudo uninstalled open office, still same issue. I did install a astronomy program which I removed because it ran slugish but I would think that would be totally removed when I reinstalled ubuntu. Is there a specific log I should check that may give an answer.

Can you kindly try to boot using a live CD and check if you encounter the same issues?

    Thanks!

Hi Nujinini I ran both 10.4 & 1010 ubuntu and both failed shutdown on live cd. simple mepis & pc linos running live cd shut down normal. Now it is possible I had a hair ball in the way but cleared with the last two cd,s which is a real possibility, I'll do some cleaning then retry 10.4. Thanks for the response.

    update on problem

I installed pclinos & did a full update on the system, thinking possible an update would cause the problem, shut the system down and it was normal. I downloaded and burned a new ubuntu 1010 cd, installed that system and were back to the same problem. This is a shame ubuntu has worked like a dream especially for myself new to linux.

Try running the live cd of a couple of different distro's to see if the probelm is confined to the ubuntu branch or happens with say Fedora. If the problem crosses over to Mandriva, Fedora, Suse, etc, then it would indicate a hardware problem, not a software problem.

My HP laptop runs ubuntu net book with no problems. The desktop is a gateway which has the problem. I installed open suse 11.3 on the desktop which is not a bad system. At least I got the printer up and running with little effort. I had the scanner working in ubuntu not sure about open suse yet. Good luck to you, I'll try the new ubuntu (11.4 I think) when it come out. Hopefully the problem will be resolved or get another computer which may be better yet. Masontx thanks for the reply and yes I did try other distros even installed one of them and had no problems. I to thought it was the computer, gateway you know, only been in the shop 4 times and still under warranty, but it has this problem only with ubuntu. My first impression was that the timing was off, the hard drive shut down to early but I'm more of a mechanic then a computer expert. At least it didn't backfire!
