Problem with Linux
I have a HP desktop. I have installed Linux and it was working for past three weeks.
Two days ago, The Linux asked for updating files and I allowed it to be updated.
Since then, The Linux does not come up and also, I have tried to re-install the linux but after getting statred, It will never gets to a point to ask for either formating or partitioning the disk, etc.
Anyone knows what I should do?

If you were not able to make a fresh install. Meaning your system is still existing and not overwritten since "It will never gets to a point to ask for either formating or partitioning the disk," Please boot your system using the previous kernel and see if the same problems persist.

Many thanks for your help.
Yes, I have shut-down the computer several times.
And I tried to re-install Linux, but It does not allow me even to get to other screens for choosing hard-drive, etc.
Please advise what you think I should do.
Is this virus or worm?

explain your issue
what exactly happens after you press the power button? does the grub menu come up? if it does then do what nujinini suggested and boot to a previous kernel, if it does not, then boot live from the cd without attempting to re-install it and run the following command:
and post the results.Code:sudo fdisk -l
Btw, there are no viruses or worms that i know of in linux, I can assure you that.

Yes,
I have done both suggestions.
The older kermel does not work either. I tried using the older kermel in safe mode,
After starting up the computer, a black background showed up and I was able to choose the followings:
1) Newer Linux (Newer Kermel)
2) Newer Linux in safe mode
3) Older Kermel (linux)
4) Older Kermel with safe mode
5) Windows XP
I have chosen options 1 to 4, the following has happend:
a) screen with black background showed up, and the system checked various things and after checking usb, it hanged.
b) I had to un-pluge the computer to be able to start up the computer again.
Please advise what you would like em to do.

Is there anything plugged in to the usb? If thr is, then unplug the device. If there is nothing in there then boot from a live cd and run the fdisk -l command and post the output.

Mike,
If you click on the image and then scroll down and up you can zoom in.
I will try to find a software and save the zoomed-in version of the screen shot.
I will post it as soon as possible.
Also, I have booted up using CD and currently I am executing the following commands
sudo apt-set update
sudo apt-set upgrade
I will report when it is done.
