Google Earth installation problems on 10.04
Hi, I'm trying to get Google Earth working on Ubuntu 10.04. I downloaded the Debian 386 version of GE from their website, and installed it by double clicking on the file name of the download. It appeared to install correctly, and the icon for GE is in the applications menu, but when I click on it nothing happens. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be. Thank you much. Jim

Open a terminal window and launch the command from there. It usually spits out an error message if it crashes. I'm not sure of the exact command but try this. Type the first 4 letters and press the tab button.
goog (press Tab button)
It should auto-complete. Post any error message.I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

Thanks for the reply. Here's the input and output from the terminal:
jim@jim-laptop:~$ google-earth
/usr/bin/google-earth: 43: ./googleearth-bin: not found
I forgot to mention that Synaptic Package Manager lists Google Earth as installed. Should I un-install it and re-install with Synaptic? Thanks for your help!

Success on installing Google Earth on Ubuntu 10.04
Here's the method I used to finally get Google Earth installed and running:
I used the "Google Earth download of .deb files" installation method on the Ubuntu documentation page for Google Earth
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Go...tion%20methods
It says to make sure the package 'lsb-core' is installed. It wasn't on my system, so I installed that first using Synaptic Package Manager.
For the installation of GE, the website gives the website:
Google Earth: Download Google Earth for PC, Mac, or Linux
for downloading the pre-compiled .deb package. I used the 32 bit choice. When I tried the installation using the 64 bit file, I got a message saying it wasn't compatible with my system. Once that 32 bit file is downloaded, just double click on it, wherever you've saved it, and it should install.
I tried the three other methods above the one I used, but I either never got a GE icon in the Applications>Internet menu, or it didn't work when I did.
Good luck to whoever might try to install Google Earth. I hope this will be of some help.

It isn't in the Ubuntu repositories? I'm rather surprised. It's in the Debian repositories, and it's easy enough to just use apt-get or Synaptic to install it with no fuss or bother. Another good reason for leaving Ubuntu, and every day I'm more glad that I did.

It's in the Mint repos so you would expect that it's available to Ubuntu users too. Maybe not.

If everything in the Mint repository was available to Ubuntu users, then there would be no need for a Mint repository, no?
In reality, I have no idea whether it's in the Ubuntu repositories. ISTR having to get it from Google when I ran Ubuntu, but I really have no clear recollection. I wouldn't bet either way, and don't have the ambition to check.

So installing via Synaptic, apt-get, or aptitude would be the way to go. That avoids dependency problems and other incompatibilities.
