ubuntu and windows problem
Dear fellows, Friends, and Sir's i have questions that is difficult to
explain because of my English but i try to make it easy and understandable..
so there it is.
operating system: Ubuntu(wubi)
hard 80 gb divide into 4 partition each 20gb.
1.Can i use ubuntu as a primary os instead of windows xp?
2.i use ubuntu in wubi and really enjoys it. i install several softwares but there is
a problem.wubi have limited space. only 10gb i gave.and you now updates or other downloading
requires more space.
i install lvpm to increase space but i dont try to use it.
so instead of increasing space of wubi i decided to use ubuntu as a os
in which i use windows as a application. like wubi in windows.
so there is another question arises.
3. Can i use two operating system at time.?
means
no one operating system depend other one each have independent and dependent right.
How dependent and Independent? i tell you.
but firstly i tell you in this case i want to give 40 gb to window(two drives) and remaining to ubuntu.
Independent cases:
->in case of corrupting an window drive! no effect on ubuntu applied. and vise versa.
->normally boot. no booting problem occurred.
->if any virus threat appear in any os then other not effected.totally separate.
Dependent cases:
i can access my window drives in ubuntu.
not ubuntu in windows.because ntfs dont support ext3.
so suggest me your opinion. what you suggest case 1,2 or 3?
and your how can i apply your suggested case.?
Remember:i dont want lose my data in ubuntu.. in third case i just transfer ubuntu
from window to seprate with require space.

What do you exactly mean by primary OS please? Can i use ubuntu as a primary os instead of windows xp?
You can have the choice of which OS to use as your Main when grub shows up.
You can install xp and ubuntu also in separate primary partitions.
You might want to try to install Ubuntu in a separate partition so that you can alot more space in your HD for it. If I may suggest.i use ubuntu in wubi and really enjoys it. i install several softwares but there is
a problem.wubi have limited space. only 10gb i gave.and you now updates or other downloading
requires more space.
i install lvpm to increase space but i dont try to use it.
so instead of increasing space of wubi i decided to use ubuntu as a os
in which i use windows as a application. like wubi in windows.
I think you might really be better off if you install your OS in separate partitions. Can i use two operating system at time.? means no one operating system depend other one each have independent and dependent right.
How dependent and Independent? i tell you.
but firstly i tell you in this case i want to give 40 gb to window(two drives) and remaining to ubuntu.
With the set-up I am suggesting, yes, your windows can get screwed up by malware pretty bad but still you can rescue your data in windows using ubuntu.->in case of corrupting an window drive! no effect on ubuntu applied. and vise versa.
->normally boot. no booting problem occurred.
->if any virus threat appear in any os then other not effected.totally separate.
My system has four OS running on separate partitions and I have a 100GB Storage Bin where I keep my data.
I can access these data from any of my OS, windows or linux. If my windows or linux gets screwed, my data is safe.
My answer is yes. But I defer to the wisdom of the gurus if the might have another opinion.Dependent cases:
i can access my window drives in ubuntu.
not ubuntu in windows.because ntfs dont support ext3.
My suggestion to summarize everything is that for you to install XP and Ubuntu in separate partitions keeping a large Storage Bin that you can access from OS.so suggest me your opinion. what you suggest case 1,2 or 3?
and your how can i apply your suggested case.?
If your OS gets fried for any reason, your data will be fairly safe and it can give you ample time to make a back-up.
You can use gparted to partition your HD. Plan well before you start.Remember:i dont want lose my data in ubuntu.. in third case i just transfer ubuntu
from window to seprate with require space.
I am attaching a screenshot of how I partiWIW.
Hope this helps.nujinini

when you say you use wubi are you using the live cd or have you installed Ubuntu. because if you have installed Ubuntu it should be the first choice in your boot loader. the first os is always the last os you installed. but their is a way to change the list if you want to.

Wubi is a way of installing Ubuntu inside Windows. You run Ubuntu just like any other Windows program. It's for trying it out without touching the Windows OS.
