    Chronic shutdown command problem

When I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 it seemed as if my problems with the shutdown and restart commands were solved; not so! The problem persists and if anyone can help I will be eternally grateful.

The only command on my shutdown menu that works is "suspend", the others simply do not respond. So if I want to shut down or restart I need to force-quit by shutting down the power supply.

can you shut down from terminal sudo shutdown -h now If so you could create a launcher to get you buy until you figure out what is wrong with the menu option.

Have you tried booting to a new live cd to see if it is a glitched update or a hardware problem?

I have been using the terminal but the suggestion to boot from the CD is a good one, I need to get the new CD and will try when it arrives.
