Install Linux on Hard Drive Meant for Other System
Hi All,
I'm wondering if there's a way for me to install Ubuntu on a hard drive that I'm shipping to my brother. He has a different system and I'm sure it has some proprietary things that I'll need to set up. This is his first Linux system so I just want it to be ready to go when I ship the drive to him. I also don't want the install to take over my boot loader for my system...I am yet to successfully fix a boot loader after I screw it up (I know it's possible but I always just reinstall) and this time around, I'm hoping to avoid doing that.

Why don't you just send him a live CD or USB pen drive that you can setup with unetbootin ? that's likely to be the best supported option ...
You should be able to fix the bootloader using Supergrub or just chroot in from a live CD and reinstall grub.

that's what I'm asking. For instance, how can I make an iso that has the b43 drivers working "out of the box" vs. having to send him a bunch of commands to run. That's actually the biggest issue is having his wireless working immediately because he doesn't have a wired connection at all.

You could try this ... but you will need to know hardware setup ...

Thanks for this link, what I ended up doing was customizing Ubuntu and making it so the STA drivers were installed and working on the live distro. This way he can at least get online and then I can remotely connect to set things up.

Would Ultimate 2.8 do what you want?
