    Restart and shutdown dead

The restart and shutdown options on my Ubuntu 10.10 do not work. The only option that is operating is "suspend". It was the same with 10.04 before upgrading. I was hoping the upgrade will help but no luck. Any suggestions?

Exactly what does "do not work" mean? What are you doing, and what is the result? What happens if you run "sudo shutdown now" in a terminal?

When I run sudo reboot or shutdown in the terminal it works fine, it is the restart and shutdown command in the dropdown menu when I click on the control icon that does not work.

Something in the settings may have been corrupted. Try removing the shutdown icon from the panel, and readding it.

Worth a try, I did that but it made no difference.

Can you shut down and restart from the System menu?

Do you get the shutdown and restart options from Ctrl-Alt-Del?

Some googling indicates that gnome-power-manager has to be running in order for the options to show up in the panel. Try running that at startup and see if it helps.

No, the only option that works from the menu is "suspend" I have to use the terminal or the power button to shut down and restart.

Run gnome-power-manager and see if it works.
