    Screen brightness changes arbitrarily (lucid)

    Dear Ubuntu people,

on my fairly new ubuntu install (10.04.1 LTS) on a laptop, the screen brightness changes seemingly at random, i.e. while I do other things like surf the web. Often, the brightness will decrease some (it does not fade to black as reported by others with similar problems) and come back a few seconds later.

Is this a known problem? Where could I look for the cause?

I have disabled any visual effects but that didn't help.

    cheers, kai

does this happen before you installed ubuntu?
I wouldn't know - it's a new machine, and the first thing I did was to install lucid lynx.

It maybe because of your laptop?
    Like a hardware error?
Could be, I guess, but I have seen strange brightness behavior on another machine where I installed ubuntu (very weird: after the unbuntu install, the (dual boot) windows xp shows strange screen brightness behavior...), so I'm thinking it may be ubuntu after all.

    kai
