Hello and welcome to the forums!

You will get better hardware support by going with a later Ubuntu release since 8.10 is now approaching 3 years old. Otherwise, you might check these troubleshooting pages to see if they help:

You can also try opening a terminal and typing:
    Alsamixer

It helped me out when I was trying to enable sound input for my mic...
Upgrade if you can...I think the newer versions run more efficiently than their previous ones...and like said above better hardware support.

Also you might need lame for recording and playing mp3's....now a days it finds the apropriate plugins and codecs automatically.

When you want to find software or plugins try looking in synaptic package manager...it helps to go to software update first and update...

The simplest explanation is that the sound level defaults to zero when you start up - check with alsamixer as suggested above.

It means that everything is allright with volume level

You need some sound codecs like 'libmad', for example (for playing mp3's). There is a terminal-level mp3 player - mpg321 - try to install it and you shold receive all library dependencies for playing media files.

Why so? I don't remember how it was in Ubuntu 8.04, but on my Ubuntu 10.10 the volume level does affect the volume of the login sound.

I wouldn't believe that Ubuntu 8.04 stores its login sounds in MP3 This tells me that it's either the volume level to blame, or that this specific soundcard was not supported in Ubuntu 8.04. Thus I adhere to everyone's advice: (try to) upgrade!

Post the output of lspci | grep Audio and see if that audio device is compatible with Linux
