Hardware error - it has nothing to do with the OS. Review your logs going back. It's likely the HDD is failing.Code:Feb 9 17:43:39 Chris kernel: [78400.988182] ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) Feb 9 17:43:44 Chris kernel: [78405.972186] ata1: device not ready (errno=-16), forcing hardreset
Hardware will *always* deteriorate/fail as it ages. No exceptions.

The drivers for Windows are not the same drivers used by Linux. Sometimes, depending on the hardware vendor's support (or lack of) for Linux, the drivers can be an issue. Due to the many ways laptops are "optimized," this is especially true for laptop vendors/hardware.
The HDD controller may have different modes it can run in - usually called IDE/legacy/compatibility and AHCI/native. It can be changed in the BIOS if it's available. Sometimes changing this mode will help.
Changing the mode will likely require an OS reinstall.
