grub rescue - help!
Newbie to ubuntu and the forum here.
I just upgraded from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 on a system dual booted with windows 7. Upon restarting, I get
error: no such device: 95ab97c1-d136-471a-b097-320a545e9bae.
And I'm left at the grub rescue> prompt.
I don't have any rescue discs to save me - the only bootable cd I have is windows reinstallation.
I've searched the boards for advice and have found nothing relevant to my particular situation.
Can someone help?!

Hello and Welcome.
Is this a WUBI install? Did you install it inside Windows or did you create partitions and install Linux separately?
Did you want to attempt a repair or reinstall....perhaps go back to the Windows bootloader?
Can you get your hands a LiveCD? Any LiveCD? Parted Magic would work wonders here.

I installed 10.04 from within Windows, in a separate partition, and updated to 10.10 from within Ubuntu.
I'd prefer to repair rather than reinstall.
I now have my roommate's laptop at my disposal, currently trying to get super grub disk onto a flash drive - but I'm on a mac, completely foreign territory, so it's taking me quite a long time.

Okay, I just made a LiveCD of Ubuntu 10.10
After the splash screen, I'm getting this error:
(process:359): GLib-WARNING**: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
any ideas?
I'm a little incensed that this process would be derailed by such a mundane error

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but from experience I do know that a Wubi install seems to screw up more often than a true dual boot. As a matter of fact, it's been years since I've had a real dual boot screw up on me. Grub handles things quite nicely these days. It's up to you in the end, but I would just defrag windows, and let ubuntu install side by side. Just my .03

After unsuccessfully trying a LiveCD and Rescatux, I finally got in with SuperGrub2Disk. My problem isn't solved yet but as long as I boot from the SuperGrub disc I'll be okay. I'm in the process of backing up my personals so I can do a wipe and reinstall of both win7 and Ubuntu, which will be side by side this time.
