ubuntu sound help - please
can anybody please help me as i am the most troll like caveman ubuntu user ever. could you please respond in the most basic of computer terminology that i may be able to understand. i really am pretty useless when it comes to computers. thanks in advance
the problem is ...
my speakers randomly cut out last night whilst i watching a video on youtube around 10 mins into the video, fine for months and months and then suddenly no sound. .. so i chose another video on youtube ( a foofighters music video) and the sound was fine.
so i then clicked back on my internet arrow and tried to watch the previous video again. then only 2 minutes into the video my sound stopped working again. i then restarted my computer and still had no sound.
also now when i click on system>preferences> sound and then choose the hardware tab it is a pink box instead of a white one and there is nothing in it at all to choose. the output setting is a dummy output stereo ( whatever that is ).
now if i restart my computer... which i will do now .... done ... well that was a fail, it stayed the same in my sound options,
sometimes when i shut down and restart there are options to choose from when i go to system>preferences>sound , in both the hardware tab and in the output tab, ( not sure what they are but there is usually stuff i can click on ) , anyway when i shut down and restart it will give me like a mad bongo noise when i log on as the user, so i know the speakers themselves are fine.. i click on my internet browser go to youtube again choose a song and it will play for at the most 2-3 minutes then silence again, suddenly cutting off. then when i check my sound options again they have all gone blank again.i dont know whats happening to it.
i know that was quite a long and stupid story but if you have made it this far down i would really appreciate any help you could give or just an idea of what is going on, like i said i am really new to linux and i am generally useless with computers, i know how to get onto terminal and thats about it.
anyway once again if anybody could help please i would appreciate it immensely.

Ok, I'll explain.
The first command, lspci -knn tell us what is inside your machine. Soundcards, Video, and a whole bunch of other stuff. the -knn part tells which module/driver is in use by each device.
That's the soundcard and the module/driver in use and sadly, it all looks good to me.Code:00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller [1106:3059] (rev 60) Kernel driver in use: VIA 82xx Audio Kernel modules: snd-via82xx
aplay should have listed your devices also but I gave you the wrong command, it should have been:
And finally lsmod command shows us all module/drivers that are loaded at boot time.Code:sudo aplay -l
Like I said, I don't really see anything that jumps out at me, can you verify the speakers work on another machine?
Check alsamixer and make sure nothing is muted.
Code:sudo alsamixer

thanks again
yeah i got these speakers off my brother and they work fine they are edifier speakers with a amp.
and yeah i tried the alsamixer also and everything seems fine on there. i just dont understand why it would stop working so suddenly. i noticed other user commenting on the same video i was watching on youtube saying that their sound had stopped working also around 10 minutes into the same video that i was watching when it first stopped working. do you think this could be a cause/?
whilst you were offline i looked on google again to try and find some more help and followed some steps where i believe i rebooted the computer.( although im not sure, ) and this does not seem to of helped either.
i also found another thread on this sight where some1 had a simmilar problem and i followed the steps somebody had asked them to take and this seemed to get my speakers working for 2 minutes before they went off again.so i really dont know whats up with it,
Many thanks for your help anyway, John
