Issues installing nvidia driver (Ubuntu 10.04)
Hey
After three nights of trying to figure out how to install nvidia driver for my Go 6600 card, I turn to you experts for counsel.
I first tried the drivers provided in "Hardware Drivers", but programs using OpenGL did not work and glx(whatever that means?) didn't work - =no Compiz.
Note that I'm quite a Linux newbie and not familiar with all these words.
Among other things, I tried downloading the NVIDIA*.run file from their site in init3 mode=stop gdm, sudo sh *.run -But doing this, I got this fail message:
It says something about Nouveau that it's screwing the installation, and i tried installing it with "blacklist nouveau" added in the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but it didn't work...Code:nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' creation time: Tue Feb 22 00:10:33 2011 installer version: 260.19.36 PATH: /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin option status: license pre-accepted : false update : false force update : false expert : false uninstall : false driver info : false precompiled interfaces : true no ncurses color : false query latest version : false no questions : false silent : false no recursion : false no backup : false kernel module only : false sanity : false add this kernel : false no runlevel check : false no network : false no ABI note : false no RPMs : false no kernel module : false force SELinux : default no X server check : false no cc version check : false run distro scripts : true no nouveau check : false run nvidia-xconfig : false sigwinch work around : true force tls : (not specified) X install prefix : (not specified) X library install path : (not specified) X module install path : (not specified) OpenGL install prefix : (not specified) OpenGL install libdir : (not specified) utility install prefix : (not specified) utility install libdir : (not specified) installer prefix : (not specified) doc install prefix : (not specified) kernel name : (not specified) kernel include path : (not specified) kernel source path : (not specified) kernel output path : (not specified) kernel install path : (not specified) precompiled kernel interfaces path : (not specified) precompiled kernel interfaces url : (not specified) proc mount point : /proc ui : (not specified) tmpdir : /tmp ftp mirror : ftp://download nvidia RPM file list : (not specified) selinux chcon type : (not specified) Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface -> License accepted. -> Installing NVIDIA driver version 260.19.36. -> Running distribution scripts executing: '/usr/lib/nvidia/pre-install'... -> done. -> The distribution-provided pre-install script failed! This driver is incompatible with the NVIDIA driver, and must be disabled before proceeding. Please consult the NVIDIA driver README and your Linux distribution's documentation for details on how to correctly disable the Nouveau kernel driver. WARNING: The modprobe configuration file to disable Nouveau, /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf, is already present. Please be sure you have rebooted your system since that file was written. If you have rebooted, then Nouveau may be enabled for other reasons, such as being included in the system initial ramdisk or in your X configuration file. Please consult the NVIDIA driver README and your Linux distribution's documentation for details on how to correctly disable the Nouveau kernel driver. ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at nvidia .
I have tried other things as well, but I'm really tierd right now and can't get my head together..
Perhaps somebody is able to help me - but maybe I've forgot to share some vital info..?
Cheers

Open up synaptic package manager and do a search for Nouveau.
There are several entries for Nouveau. If the one package named
Nouveau-Firmware is listed as being installed, mark it for uninstall.
Do not uninstall any other Nouveau packages.
After you uninstall it, reboot your computer and then go to Hardware Drivers and try installing the recommended Nvidia driver.
After it installs you will need to reboot again.

Sorry for late reply
I've been busy at work..
There's the Xorg.0.log file, maybe it can provide some more info.
You're suggestion to remove nouveau firmware failed cuz it wasn't installed. But the X server seems to be from nouveau, does that matter? Could it be a clue?
"Failed to initialize the NVIDIA GPU at PCI:1:0:0" But according to lspci|grep -i nvidia, it's VGA and located 01:00.0, does that matter?
(Geforce go 6600)
Really sorry for the late reply. I'll be quicker this time.
