Graphics issues on Ubuntu and openSuse (64-bit)

Oh my. I belive there is a problem with my graphics card, because when I start a VMware vm with accellerated graphics, i get this message:

    Code:
Cannot open file "/home/joe/.vmware/dndlogs/ * dndlog.conf": No such file or directory.

3D graphics acceleration will be disabled. This computer does not have a 3D graphics system supported by VMware Workstation.
My laptop model is the ASUS U52F-BBL9 btw.

This depends a lot upon the video hardware and drivers used. For example with my nVidia 8800GT board (definitely 3d capable) and the default nouveau driver used by newer Linux distributions, 3d acceleration was not available. When I rebuilt the kernel without nouveau support and installed the nVidia proprietary driver, it worked. This applied to both my Gnome desktop for Compiz support as well as 3d graphics in my VirtualBox VMs.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
