external hard drive boot
hey i have created a live ubunto live cd from an iso file...this cd boots just fine. however, after a successfull installation onto my usb e -hdd, and a restart that spits out the live cd from the rom, my pc absolutely will not boot from the "installed version".
i did the install with the internal hard drive dis connected
the live cd will run just fine
ubuntu is installed correctly on the external and restarts
at this point (no live cd in the dvd drive) the ehd will not boot..pc just sits there
i choose boot loader options and choose the ehd.....
this cycles through a few dos commands looking for internet and what not but will never boot
what do i have to do to make this machine boot from this stubborn e -hdd?
thanksLast edited by spi11655; 02-25-2011 at 05:28 AM.

Have you installed and configured grub correctly??

Have you set the BIOS settings for the correct bootorder? According to your explanation you have installed Grub on your external drive, so this has to be the first drive to boot from.

i have no idea.....i just went through the installation process and it acted like it was ready to go. it began the "official" restart process , popped out the live cd , power off, power on , then black screen with random biios checking a few things over and over and over
...this whole time i have had the main hard drive unhooked, just the external attached

here is what ive done so far since the last post where i got a grub error.
-i went into the setup menu and under boot order i chose the ehd called my_book
to be the primary for the floppy device category. it listed as wd mybook hdd or something.
now all that is listed there is wd ses device. both the wd mybook and wd ses device are listed at the boot device selection.
picking ses device gives me a pink fabric messed up looking screen and gets stuck
picking wd mybook gives me a pure black screen and does not even as much as print a single letter or flicker
