would you go to a terminal and sudo <enter your Password when asked> type the command lspci and copy the out here.

I suspect you may have a wireless board that needs firmware install.

Or even run this script and post the generated file collectNWData.txt which will provide much more additional info to lspci.

    Hi again,
You have a realtek wireless card and it need drivers to work.

I not able to post the fix for you because I haven't meet the 15 post minimum on this forum yet.

but if you do a google search for realtek wireless for ubuntu you'll find the correct fix.

    hope this helps.

Go to System /Administration/Synaptic software manager then do a search for "network-manager" (without the quotes) it should be installed but if for some reason it is not install it.

Then try the wireless card again if that doesn't show anything. you still don't have the right drivers or firmware for your card or both.

    Hi Again,
Sorry I missed in your first post that your using backtrack not straight ubuntu. Backtrack is not an official ubuntu Distro and thus it differs from the original Ubuntu distro. Unless you have need of doing penitration testing or security work. you'd be better off with a pure ubuntu distro.
or if you need this type of distro you may find the back track forum a better place to get your wirless up and running that forum do a search for bactrack on the web.
under community. I found the info your seeking i believe by doing a search on the forum for realtek.
    good Luck

if you have an ethernet connection open you terminal and do:

    sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper*

download the windows version of your wireless driver. would be something like r#####.inf and r###.sys

    in your temrinal do:
    sudo ndiswrapper -i driver.inf
    sudo ndiswrapper -l
    note the xxxxxxx
sudo ndiswrapper -a devid(the xxxxx) driver
    sudo vim /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
    change to true: [ifupdown] managed=true
    sudo depmod -a
    sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

your wireless should show up in the network manager icon on your toolbar
