- I can be found either 40 miles west of Chicago, or in a galaxy far, far away.

Go to the Canon web site. If there is a Linux driver for it, you will find a link for it there, probably under the "support" page for this printer. Often, these printer manufacturers have outside parties manage their Linux drivers, so you may be directed to another site.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Thanks Rubberman. Canon no longer lists the printer driver as available and did not offer any help. I will phone them at the national site tomorrow and see if I can get any help.

Have just checked with Canon.nz and theylooked in USA list for me but no luck with Linux driver and no advice about what I can do to get one except to ask if anuone has wreitten a driver for the Canon PIXMA iP1200. This model is no longer in production so I guess my chances are pretty slim. The printer came free when I bought my PC tewo or three years ago. Thanks, Peter.

Work directly with CUPS web interface. (http://localhost:631/) (note: 1.4+ will reject a referrer tag, use copy link and paste or enter manually)
It should see the printer but you will have to manually select the correct gutenprint driver. This will be trial and error since your printer doesn't even show up in the Openprinting Database, which seems to have fallen into a time hole anyway.*
Note: I have a Pixma MX300 and use the MP150 driver... it's a lowest common denominator driver which has some color matching issues, but it works for my printer, no guarantee with yours.
*MP150 is still listed a "paperweight" at openprinting, yet it does work (with color issues), should be listed as at least partial.
Good Luck.

Thanks for that. Had a look but I am not well enough informed to be able to find the driver list. Any further clues would be most appreciated. peter

CUPS Printer Installation
1.4 layout is a little different but the functionality is the same.
Don't bother with the cups.org list, go straight to the admin page and click on Add Printer (you may have to enter your user and password), from there it should be more or less self explanatory.
If you find drivers are lacking there, you may have to add the gutenprint package in synaptic (foomatic-db-gutenprint).
