Total newbie and tried to upgrade to 11.04 Beta and....
Yes you heard right I have no knowledge of the command line and decided to upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 beta by forcing the software centre to show the beta. used a command off a youtube video in what looked like a windows style run box. With 3 minutes remaining on the install it crashed totally and I was forced to reboot. Lo and behold all i got was an out of range message. i'm assuming the OS is guessing my screen resolution and getting it wrong but have no way to lower it either with a keyboard shortcut or have any idea how to do it by command line. The only live CD I have is I think 10.04 and here is the stupid bit - I didnt make a back up.
Take it easy on me guys i know very little about Linux

Before your attempted upgrade, was Ubuntu 10.10 the only operating system on the computer?
What specifically does "crashed totally" mean? Did the installation just stop? Did you get any error messages before you re-booted? What exactly did happen?

it was indeed the only OS on the computer. Had more than enough of that virus known as windoze! (typo deliberate) As for crashing the install hung on 3 minutes remaining for about 30 minutes and neither the mouse or the keyboard would work

Hi there!

Definitely get that command for us, as suggested by yancek.
Could you tell us what video it was, so we can get a look at that box?
Does this computer boot at all at this point?
If not, can you post any info that appears on the screen when you attempt a startup?

ook finally got it.
ALT+F2 calls up the run application box and I entered update-manager -d
the only thing I get when i book up is a very brief screen showing a console window with an option at the bottom to press F12 to enter setup and i think one other.
At this point I think i just want to get access to my pictures as the music is on the phone. burn them to disk then wipe the darn thing. Only trouble is I don't have permission to access my wallpaper folder from the live CD
EDIT: unable to enter the youtube URL as it says i'm not allowed to yet. Someone had an Einstein moment

That would be the BIOS screen and the second option is likely select device to boot.the only thing I get when i book up is a very brief screen showing a console window with an option at the bottom to press F12 to enter setup and i think one other.
Are you trying to access your Pictures folder in nautilus, the file manager? You can open a terminal and do: sudo nautilus. I'm not sure if you have to mount your partition first or if it will be detected. Try it.
