If it is a commercial DVD, make sure you have the dvdcss package installed, otherwise VLC and other players cannot decode the disc.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

G'Day guys and thanks so much for the help; Since posting this question things have deteriorated, vlc will not open now, I removed and installed it again but nogood, when I try to open it I get the message
""Failed to execute child process "vic" (No such file or directory) "",
Have looked all over the place but can find nothing about this, has anybody any ideas,
I even looked in the vlc wiki nothing (???) beats me !!!
Kind regards Miykel

Try, in a terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Then have another go.

G'Day found the problem as to why vlc wouldn't open, the command in properties was wrong (??) it had VIC instaed of VLC, thats what the error was telling me but I never had enough experience of Ubuntu to know, it was a kind fella on vlc forum who pointed me in the right direction.
Thanks again for qall your help
Regards Miykel
