One thing I haven't tried but might try in your case is there is an option to testdrive another version of Ubuntu, not using VirtualBox.

One thing I haven't tried but might try in your case is there is an option to testdrive another version of Ubuntu, not using VirtualBox.
I can't post links here but if you search "ubuntu test another ubuntu" and click the link that says "Testdrive an Ubuntu ISO" you will see how to do it.
