Bluetooth working - enabled but not finding devices on scan

I am using Ubuntu, now installed KDE (kubuntu) and I have Bluetooth working and enabled but for some strange reason the bluetooth scan is not finding any devices in spite of the fact that I have my mobile phone with bluetooth on and discoverable.

My laptop is HP Touchsmart tm2 2102tu.

Here's output of my hciconfig -a

Neither hcitool scan nor scanning with Gnome or KDE bluetooth settings is working for me.

Any body who has a clue as to how to fix this issue?

However, it works well in Windows 7. Any other information you require I'll gladly furnish.

What are you trying to pair it with? Did you put the device into pairing mode when the bluetooth manager was scanning?
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

In Ubuntu go System -> Preferences -> Bluetooth
This starts a wee program which uses any existing bluetooth adapters to scan for nearby devices.
You may have already done this, of course.

    In the terminal, type:
    lspci -v

This will give you a verbose listing and may enable you to see if your bluetooth adapter is recognised by the OS.

If so, and the regular bluetooth discovery and connection program doesn't work, then there are many other bluetooth discovery/connection progs available, such as blueman and bluewho. Find these through the software center.

You might like to try plugging in a different external bluetooth adapter to the usb port. Something like a wireless mouse bluetooth plug perhaps.
This may allow you to "see" other devices as well.

If this last thing works, this indicates that the built-in HP Touchsmart bluetooth adapter is not being recognised by the OS. Your next action would be to go to HP website and find the appropriate download section for motherboard tools, and see if there is a Linux driver.
A Linux driver is unlikely, but you can often use the Windows drivers via the ndiswrapper tool. Find this also via the software center. This is usually for a/b/g/n wireless networks, but it may be useful for bluetooth.

    Hope this helps

Install kbluetooth and try running it as root.

I'm trying to connect with my Nokia X2-01 phone. I set the bluetooth on and discoverable at both ends.

The device actually scans, but no device is detected. The bluetooth adaptor is otherwise detected because hciconfig shows the device as hci0 and I'm able to turn bluetooth on and off using the hardware switch also. I'm also able to use hciconfig to set the parameters.

I've tried both KDE (Kubuntu) and Gnome, but neither works. I've also tried blueman but it doesn't work also.

    Using 11.04 Natty.

If you need any other information, I'll gladly post it here.

I have seen on my systems that if the switch is off when you boot, this sort of problem occurs, but if you turn on the switch and then boot, it is ok. Have you tried that, turning on the switch and rebooting?

Tried that with the bluetooth/wireless on while booting. It's a common switch anyway and wireless is on while booting, it has no effect on this issue.

That's why I hate servicing laptops. They've kinky buttons here and there and no one knows how they'll behave on Linux.

Oh well. It was worth a try. Anyway, try re-enabling the network connection via the network manager tool, assuming you haven't tried that already...

Oh, well, I will try again after a kernel upgrade. Maybe something is wrong with the driver after all, since bluetooth works perfectly in Windows.

About the network manager, I am using KDE currently and tried to connect to bluetooth after disconnecting and reconnecting the wireless, but it still doesn't scan the devices.
