Post the contents of the file /etc/apt/sources.list
Right off the bat, looking at the ppa website, I can see they haven't packaged xbmc for Ubuntu 11.04 yet, so if you're sources.list is pointing to natty, you'll get the not found error.
Found this thread in the Ubuntu forums that seems to confirm this. So it seems right now the only options are to use the unstable repo or try building the package from source yourself.

What happens when you try to update from the terminal?
Are there any other files in /etc/apt or /etc/apt.d? The xbmc repo isn't listed in the main one here.
Otherwise it looks fine.
You can try creating a new sources.list file using this generator.
Remove all the old ones in /etc/apt and /etc/apt.d and save the generated one as /etc/apt/sources.list.

it comes up with a very simular error, can paste in here if you need to see it?
in /etc/apt there is : secring.gbg, sources.list, sources.list.distUpgrade, sources.list.save, trustdb.gbg and trusted.gbg
there isnt an /etc/apt.d folder, could this be the problem?
will give it a go mate

Sorry, I think the directory is actually /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. Either way, it's not an issue to not be there. Just a way to organize 3rd party repositories.
The gbg stuff is for package signing.
And files not ending in .list shouldn't be read, as I recall.
So I'm confused where it's reading this xbmc repo from.
I would create a new sources.list and see if that helps.
Open a text editorCode:sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.back
Paste this in it and saveCode:gksudo nautilus /etc/apt/sources.list
