No sound on ubuntu 10.10

I'M FED UP YES, FED UP! I am a newbie on Linux, I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on Windows XP, everything is good, but NO SOUND FROM SPEAKER!

I have installed GNOME Mixer to check if everything is not mute, insert the line 'options snd-hda-intel =generic', allowed Audio on User & Groups but still no sound. I sound card is on board, Ubuntu recognises I have a soundcard etc...

You seem to have leapt a few steps ahead by installing another mixer. So just to clarify where you are in the "discovery phase" did you (before doing anything else)

Left click on the speaker icon on the top bar and slide it over to the right ?

Sounds <--- pardon the pun, Obvious, but that is often the reason for muted sound on fresh installs !!

Check in Preferences -> Sound -> Hardware and make sure the correct output (digital, 2.0, 5.1, etc) is set. Also disable any other sound devices that may be listed there such as HDMI audio output.
