    Ubuntu software center

I find that I have to go through Ubuntu Software Center to download and install an app but now
it will not even open. Does Ubuntu have something similiar to system restore?
Though maye that would clear this error up. I think this error is occuring as a result of trying to download the app Irfanview. Being new to Ubuntu I just tried the usual way and somehow it caused this error. iview428_setup.exe is probably stuck in the system. Heck I don't know.

COULD NOT LAUNCH UBUNTU SOFTWARE CENTER
    Failed to execute child process"/home/bill/Downloads/
iview428_setup.exe" (No such file or directory) Say what? Does anyone know what has happened? Thanks

Where did you get that exe from?

Ubuntu is _not_ Windows, it cant run Windows executable (*.exe).

    Smile Software Centre issue

I has a similar problem when the s/w centre wouldn't open. You can probably fix it by using the other installation tool 'Synaptic Package Manager' and searching for 'ubuntu software centre'. When found click the check-box to re-install and apply - hopefully it will fix your problem too.

Also you CAN run .exe files under Ubuntu if you install Wine - works for lots of .exe's but not all !

    Thumbs down

Well what a crock. What good is the da*n OS? Just about every app/program I have ever installed had an exe extension. Don't make any difference where I tried to download the app.

No, you do not have to use Ubuntu Software Center to install any application, it is just one of many ways to install applications.

There are many ways to backup your system - even automatically - and then restore the system from the back up. I don't see how this question is part of what your main problem seems to be though.

You are using windows think to try to install windows programs on a Linux system. Without using WINE, that's going to be about as successful as trying to use Chevy parts to fix a Ford.

Linux has a huge selection of applications readily and freely available in the repositories (google for Linux repositories). You may have to add additional repositories, which is quite easy to do to get what you want. There is almost never a need to go download an app from some site.

Many of these apps have the same functionality as the windows programs that were written for the same purpose, some of them do it better, other not so well. Often it is a matter of perception.

Pretty much the same thing that would happen if you tried to install a *.deb file on a windows machine - it won't work!

Just a guess here, but "just about every app" you have ever installed has gone on a windows machine, hasn't it? Linux is not windows, it does things differently, just as MAC does things differently from either Linux or MS.

Perhaps if you would tell us what the program is for, e.g. what it supposed to do, we could suggest a Linux alternative. It may also work under WINE, many if not most windows apps will and if you have a windows app that you just can't live without, we may be able to help get it working for you.

Basically, you are trying to drive a square peg into a round hole, and blaming the hammer for it not going. People in this community (and this is just one of many sources of Linux help) can help you find a round peg, or perhaps square up the hole you're trying to fill.

    EDIT

Try one (or more) of these, all suggested as Linux alternatives to irfanview:

XnView, GQView, Mirage, GThumb, ImageMagick, GIMP, KView, xv, Kuikshow, Gwenview

These are in the repositories, no need to go hunting for them.

Thanks guys/gals as the case may be. Since I posted the problem I have found a way to open the Software Center. I would ask what other ways are there to download and install software. I am beginning to learn more about this discombulated system as I go along. I like Wine. I will look into using it.

Not sure I'd call it discombobulated, but it made me laugh. You can do this however you want, but if it were me I'd leave Windows alone and concentrate only on Linux. I started using Linux back in the Xandros days and it scared me to death. (2003) I kept a Windows computer working until I learned more about Linux, but once I saw the power of it I threw Windows out the window! LOL. Learn how Linux works and you'll absolutely love it, and a few years down the road you'll look back at how hard you were making it and laugh with the rest of us at Windows. I'll NEVER go back to Windows. My computer would set idle if it were the only choice now. As to other ways to install software, start with Synaptic and then graduate up to APT. Synaptic is the easiest to use other than the Ubuntu software center. The reason I say learn how to use Synaptic is not all the other distros have a software center like Ubuntu. You may decide to try your hand at another distro someday that only uses Synaptic. Hope this helps somewhat.

    Most importantly have fun!!!

    1. to get applications use apt/aptitude, or synaptic if you prefer a gui
try updating the software centre or downloading the downloading the deb from launchpad

    help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/apt-get.html

    2. yes there is a restoration system known as "back in time" you can find it in the apt repository
    or see:
    backintime.le-web.org

    3. GNU/Linux cannot run windows applications outside of Wine(or "Play on Linux" which is a Wine front end), Wine can be found in the repo's and is pretty self explanatory

    Talking

Hi Webby. Thanks for the info and encourgement. I must admit the more I explore this OS the more I like it. I am giving this old lappy to my neighbors grandson so he can play games. This OS is challanging indeed but this old 81 year old needs something to get past his boring days. Getting old sucks bigtime. Avoid it if you can.
